| Dr. Robert Bruce Matheny, Sr. passed away on October 22, 2012. He was born January 29, 1934 near Stanford, Kentucky, the second son of Adam Pence Matheny, Sr. and Dorotha Steele Matheny. He served in the Army Reserves and the US Navy during the Korean War and in the US Air
Force during the Viet Nam War. He was a graduate of Tulane Medical School and practiced medicine in Sebree, Kentucky, and Half Moon Bay, California, before coming to Middlesboro in 1970. He served this area as a family physician until his retirement in 1998. He was preceded by his parents and one brother, James Graham Matheny. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ann Dudley Brown Matheny; by his three children and their spouses, Robert Bruce Matheny Jr. (Rema) of Lexington; Katherine Shawn Matheny Dresser (Bill) of Indianapolis; David Pence Matheny (Barbara) of Stanford, Kentucky; and by his grandchildren: Lydia Ann and William Donald (Will) Dresser, Margaret Ann (“Maggie”) and Adam Pence Matheny III. He is also survived by his brothers, Adam Pence Matheny, Jr. and Joseph Steele Matheny (Pegi); his sister, Patricia Ashbrook (Terry); sister-in-law, Judith Matheny and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Shumate Funeral Home Chapel. Internment with graveside services will be at Buffalo Springs Cemetery in Stanford, Kentucky. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Friends of the Library or Bluegrass Hospice would be appreciated.
