Also, there is an exhibit hall where over 350+ residency programs and others that are on display for you to talk with about the programs and opportunities they offer. See https://aafp.org/events/national-conference/about/why-attend.html
- When and where is National Conference? July 25-27, 2019 in Kansas City, MO.
- Who can attend? Medical Students and Residents
- Is there funding available to attend? Yes, there are scholarships for students to attend through the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation (AAFPF) and Kentucky Academy of Family Physicians Foundation(KAFP/F).
- How do I apply for a student scholarship to attend? The AAFPF has two major types of scholarships: Family Medicine Leads Scholarship(http://www.aafp.org/events/national-conference/about/scholarships.html) where the recipient receive $600; and B. Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leaders Institute Scholarships (https://www.aafpfoundation.org/foundation/our-work/grants-awards/all/fml-leader.html) where the recipient receive $1,000 towards the conference.
- Is it competitive and what are the due dates? Yes, there are only 220 Family Medicine Leads (AAFPF FML) Scholarships offered nationwide with the due date for submission as May 1st. Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leaders Institute (AAFPF FMLELI) Scholarships are due March 1st and only 30 are selected nationwide.
- Should I apply for both AAFPF scholarships and what if I do not get selected for either scholarship? It is up to you whether you want to apply for both scholarships. The AAFP Scholarships require a lot more work to apply for as you are assigned a Leadership Program Track, then develop and complete a leadership project. If you do not get funded for either the AAFPF scholarships then you will be considered for KAFP/F financial support. BUT you must apply for at least the AAFPF Family Medicine Leads Scholarship to be eligible for KAFP/F funding to attend NC.
- What if I only apply for the AAFPF FML Scholarship($600) and am not one of the 220 recipients? KAFPF has been able to raise funds to cover all KY students that have applied but were not selected to receive AAFPF FML Scholarship ($600).
- What if I apply for AAFPF FMLELI Scholarship($1,000) and am not one of the 30 selected? Your AAFPF FMLELI application will be considered for KAFP/F 2019 Leaders Scholarship ($1,000) BUT not for the KAFP/F NC Scholarship ($600).
- How many KAFP/F 2019 Leaders Scholarships will be awarded? Only 1 Kentucky student and 1 Kentucky resident will receive the $1,000 each.
- How does the KAFP/F 2019 Leaders Scholarship differ from the AAFPF FMLELI Scholarships? KAFP/F 2019 Leaders Scholarships (one student and one resident) will participate in a state-level program inspired by the AAFPF FMLELI. What KAFP/F will offer is the following:
- KAFP family physician mentor, who will serve as a role model, provide monthly guidance and project support.
- The opportunity to develop and complete a Leadership Project of your choice – your project to be published in KAFP Journal
- $1,000 to be used for National Conference and your project.
- If I apply for both AAFPF Scholarships and am not selected does this disqualify me for KAFP/F funding to attend NC? No, it does not disqualify you from being eligible to be the one selected for either the KAFP/F NC Scholarship of ($600) or the KAFP/F 2019 Leaders Scholarship ($1,000). But KAFPF will not provide $1,600.
- If I apply ONLY for the AAFPF FMLELI Scholarship and do not get selected will that AAFPF FMLELI application be used to consider me for the $600 KAFP/F NC Scholarship? No, you must apply for the AAFPF Family Medicine Leads Scholarship ($600) to be eligible for the KAFP/F NC Scholarship ($600). So, if you are thinking it is too much paperwork then you should only apply to the AAFPF Family Medicine Leads Scholarship ($600).
- Wait a minute? I am a Kentucky Family Medicine Resident and you have not said what funding is available for me? AAFPF Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leaders Institute is open to residents. So, of those 30 selected some will be residents. KAFPF will provide only 1 scholarship to a Kentucky resident that applies to AAFPF Family Medicine Leads Emerging Leaders Institute but is not selected. Question 10 above explained the KAFP/F Family Medicine Leads Leaders initiative.
- How do I let you know that I have applied for either or both of the AAFPF Scholarships? Whom do I talk to about this? You should make copies of what you submit to AAFPF and send a copy to Ms. Sherry Spragens at …. Also, Sherry will be able to talk with you about what KAFPF is offering.
